Safety Rules for Pine Cone firelighters

The process of making pine cone fire lighters uses flammable wax and toxic chemicals. Don’t let your children play with them. If you have small children who put everything they touch into their mouths, don’t set the pine cone firestarters on the hearth where your child could eat or chew on the pinecones. This also aplies to a family pet. Also set them up high in case your toddler decides to throw them into the fire all at once when you answer the phone.

How to Use Pine Cone Firestarters

Be aware of the safety rules before you proceed to use these pine cones.

To use as a fire starter place the pine cone on top of the kindling and light the edge of one of the scales. Watch the beautiful colors as they catch fire and put on a wonderful light display.

Erecting a shelter fly

The tent frame is erected in the usual manner. Use slightly higher upright poles if these are available. The fly is well down to the ground on the weather side. Face the high side into a bank of natural protection, if available and/or required.

Two tent frames erected with a difference of at least 15cm to 22cm in height. Their distance apart depends on the size of the fly, but would be about 100cm to 130cm. The fly is pulled well down to the ground on the weather side, then over the lower frame, then over the higher frame and guy out the remaining canvas. Fly ropes on the high side may have to be temporarily lengthened with additional short pieces of rope. Face the high side into some natural protection such as a bank, if available and/or required.  This would not be satisfactory with a fly smaller than 427cm x 427cm.

Shelter fly erection

Shelter flys provide protection from the sun, rain and wind, for food preparation, washing up and eating.
When erecting a shelter over the fire, for protection from rain when cooking, remember to allow for the chimney on the stove.
Select the type of fly to suit your need for protection.
Erection of the following shelter flys is based on standard tent frames.

The position of the pegs is calculated by standing with your back to the
upright, taking two paces straight out, then turn left, take two more paces and
stop. This is the place for the peg. Mallet peg into the ground (angled), to
the base of the upright. Repeat this process to the right side.
